 IMPORTANT PLACES OF VISIT IN KOTTAYAM



Kottayam, among one of Kerala’s more mountainous districts, provides of Kerala’s finest natural sceneries, sandwiched between the serene backwaters of the Vembanad Lake on the west and the mighty Western Ghats on the east. Most of India’s natural rubber is grown in and around Kottayam. This peaceful town on the banks of Meenachil River has a sizeable Syrian Christian population. It is he headquarters of the largest circulated regional daily newspaper in India, the Malayala Manorama that is published in Malayalam and has a circulation of over 9 million. Kottayam was the first town in India to achieve 100% literacy and is the home town of India’s first Booker prize winner Arundhati Roy, the celebrated author of ‘God of Small things’.

Kottayam is situated about 50 Kms east of Alappuzha via Changanassery by road. There are direct buses from here to Periyar wildlife Sanctuary. Ernakulam is the nearest Airport, which is only 71 kms from Kottayam. The famous backwater village of Kumarakom is only 10 kms away by road. It is ideal for boating, fishing and for bird watching. The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is famous haunt for migratory birds.

 Located in the heart of the town, Thirunakkara Shiva Temple is built in typical Kerala architecture. It is well known for its traditional Sanskrit drama, Kootiattam.

 The Shiva Temple at Ettumanoor, 12 Kms north of Kottayam is famous for its superb woodcarvings and murals.

 Puthuppally St. George Church, one of the oldest and renowned Church of Malankara Orthodox Church is just 8 Km from Kottayam. The holy remains of St. George is kept here by the Malankara Metropolitan of Orthodox Church.

 Sabarimala, one of the most famous pilgrimages of South India is situated approx. 140 kms from Kottayam. Every year millions of devotees all around the country throng to the temple to get a glimpse of Lord Ayappa.


 St. Mary’s Manarcaud, one of the oldest Church is just 4 km from Rubber Board. The famous 8 days Lent fast is observed from Sept 1-8, which is being attended, by millions of devotees all over the world every year. The holy remains of St. Mary’s dress is kept in the divine pilgrimage for blessing.

 Thazhathangady Juma Masjid is a mosque situated in Thazhathangady, one of the Heritage Zones of Kerala, India, near the town of Kummanam. It is one of the oldest mosques in India and is more than 1000 years old. It is famous for its richness of architecture, wood carvings and the beauty. This mosque is situated on the banks of the Meenachil river

  

 Kumarakom is a small picturesque village, situated 15 km away from Kottayam, at the border of Vembanad lake. Renowned for its breathtaking backwater destination, Kumarakom offers houseboat cruises, fishing and sightseeing experiences, boating in crafts and canoes through its enchanting water ways. The huge houseboats, traditionally known as the Kettuvalloms provides facilities like kitchen, toilet, bathrooms, sitouts etc. The amazing beauty and peacefulness of this place attracts every one.  

 

 Meenachil River originates from Illikkalkallu, Marmala, Wagamon, Kudamuruttimala and flows through the taluks of Meenachil and Vaikom in Kottayam district and merges into the Vembanadu Lake. The river is the venue of several boat races held during the Onam season. It is immortalized through the booker prize won, Arundhathi Roy's 'God of Small Things'.  

 Marmala Waterfall
The beautiful Marmala stream and its magnificient waterfalls lies a few kms from Erattupetta which is around 50kms away from Kottayam. The water that falls from a height of 60metres joins the river passing through Teekoy rubber estate. A hanging bridge, located under the waterfalls, is used to pass through the greenly woods.
